George Burton is an NAACP Image Award–nominated pianist, composer, and bandleader who has built a career refusing to pick a lane. Working simultaneously across jazz ensemble, orchestral writing, modular electronics, choral composition, and large-scale installation, Burton treats them as the same practice.
George spent seven years as pianist with the Sun Ra Arkestra under Marshall Allen — an apprenticeship in cosmic ensemble logic. His ensembles have toured Europe, including appearances at Jazz Jantar in Poland and the Koa Jazz Festival in France, and performed at the Newport Jazz Festival, the Kimmel Center, Blues Alley, and on NPR’s Jazz Night in America. His collaborators include Shabaka Hutchings, David Murray, Makaya McCraven, Marquis Hill, James Carter, Dezron Douglas, Meshell Ndegeocello, and Odean Pope’s Saxophone Choir, among many others.
“One of the most powerful and meaningful albums I heard in 2024.” —Vinyl Rewind
“★★★★… With his ambitious tapestry of jazz-plus musical and spoken word elements, keyboardist George Burton gamely breaks new ground.” — DOWNBEAT
“Think of it as a modern day mashup of Max Roach, Sun Ra, Gil Scott Heron, The Last Poets, and to some extent Curtis Mayfield. Contemporary projects such as Dana Murray’s Negro Manifesto, D’Angelo’s Black Messiah, Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp a Butterfly as well as projects from avant bluesman Fantastic Negrito come to mind as well.” — MAKING A SCENE
