Trombonist/Producer ALEX ASHER wears many hats. As a bandleader, he fronts celebrated future soul outfit People’s Champs and organizes Los Cumpleaños, the genre-bending electro-cumbia ensemble. As a trombonist, Asher and his horn section, The Superpower Horns, co-wrote and recorded the arrangements for Beyoncé’s 4, including the Grammy-winning bop “Love on Top.”
On June 26th, Asher will display his skills as a music producer alongside his skills as a trombonist, releasing the self-titled debut album of his newest project, Slow Motion. The group celebrates the release with a live performance at LunÁtico in Bed Stuy, Brooklyn on June 29th.
Slow Motion formed during the pandemic, playing a weekly residency at now-defunct Brooklyn music hotspot Wild Birds. “Like a DJ, I went deep into my record collection and curated a set of songs for everyone living in New York City in 2020,” says Asher. “A set of music to bring joy back into people’s lives.” The group features Puerto Rico/New York-based drummer Joel Mateo (Buscabulla), bassist Michael LaValle (Emily King), and pianist Julia Chen (Lulada Club).
