New sounds from a new bassist from New Zealand with a remarkably strong rhythmic — and musical — sense.
Hamish Smith - bass
Nicola Caminiti - saxophone
Eden Ladin - piano
Jochen Rueckert - drums
New Zealand-born bassist and composer HAMISH SMITH has emerged as a dynamic voice in contemporary jazz, recognized for his rhythmic inventiveness and groove-driven approach. Now based in New York City, he has built an international career touring and recording with artists such as Paquito D’Rivera, Miguel Zenón, Ari Hoenig, Jonathan Kreisberg, Jochen Rueckert, Manuel Valera, Henry Hey, and the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. Smith also leads his own ensemble and is a founding member of the collaborative quartet Immigrantet. NEA Jazz Master Todd Barkan has praised him as “a modern marvel – one of the great young bassists in the world.”
Smith's new album, Elsewhere Now (2025)—released on Ropeadope Records—represents his most personal artistic statement to date. The ten-track collection written over five years reflects on loss, transformation and resilience in a rapidly changing world. Born from Smith’s desire to document a period marked by global upheaval and personal growth, the music balances emotional clarity with rhythmic vitality and storytelling.
