Hailing from New Brunswick, NJ, 29-year-old KAYLA CHILDS performing as BLACK BUTTAFLY is a Philadelphia-based multi-instrumentalist, producer, and bandleader. Her musicality is a sophisticated blend of classic soul sensibilities and contemporary innovation, rooted in a childhood of formal jazz study and gospel tradition. Influenced by the harmonic complexity of Patrice Rushen, Herbie Hancock, and Stevie Wonder, she crafts a sound that is both spiritually resonant and effortlessly modern.

Named Philly Magazine’s Best New Artist of 2025, Kayla’s technical prowess as a pianist and vocalist has taken her to stages across Europe, Australia, and the U.K. She has recorded and performed with elite talents including Pete Rock, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Lenny White, Brandon Woody’s UPENDO and has opened for visionary artists like Kamasi Washington and Meshell Ndegeocello.

Kayla released her debut EP, Fly Free, in late 2024 and is creating new music for release in 2026. Her work transcends simple performance; she is a storyteller whose compositions serve as immersive, soulful experiences.
