Originally from Pascagoula, Mississippi, J. WALTER HAWKES is a performer, composer, and arranger/orchestrator based in New York City since 1995. He has played his trombone with people, on recordings, and in productions you've heard of; and on many more you probably haven't. He is the winner of four Emmy Awards and a Golden Reel for his television composing work; all received whilst frolicking about the town playing his horn and singing with his ukulele in dives, at festivals, and beneath trees all over the world.

BENNIE GREEN (1923-1977) was a trombonist that straddled the worlds of swing, bebop, and r&b/soul. Mostly active in the 50s and 60s, the groups he involved himself with, either as leader or sideman (side-person? side-earthling?) were good-time expressions of joy. Bennie typically paired himself with a soulful tenor saxophone player (Charlie Rouse, Gene Ammons, Sonny Stitt, Jimmy Forrest, Ike Quebec) and an incredibly swinging rhythm section. Bennie's approach to the trombone was unique, and not necessarily in lock-step with the jazz trombone trends of the time.

Bennie is a somewhat lesser known figure today, but waxed recordings for Blue Note, Decca, Prestige, and others. So many of these records are outstanding examples of swinging, accessible (yet deep) jazz that ooze of a great hang on both sides of the bandstand. J. Walter and the band will present a curated selection of this exuberant music live at LunÀtico for your joy and pleasure.
