Michael Blake has been blowing away audiences at LunÁtico for as long as we’ve been open. Tonite’s iteration, Chroma Nova, brings to mind palm trees growing out of the frozen tundra, creating a sinuous blend of Brazilian rhythms and modern jazz. NOT TO BE MISSED!
Michael Blake - tenor and soprano sax, flute
Skye Soto Steele - violin
Gili Lopes - bass
Guilherme Monteiro - guitar
Rogerio Boccato - drums & percussion
In a career spanning four decades, New York City based saxophonist MICHAEL BLAKE has created a large body of recorded work in the field of contemporary jazz. As a leader he has over a dozen albums to his name, featuring the saxophonist's original compositions. He has toured internationally as a leader while supporting artists such as The Lounge Lizards, Ben Allison. Charlie Hunter and Steven Bernstein/Henry Butler and the Hot 9.
CHROMA NOVA is composed of violinist Skye Soto Steele, bassist Gili Lopes, guitarist Guilherme Monteiro and percussionist Rogerio Boccato. Their debut album Dance of the Mystic Bliss features Blake's saxophones and flute immersed in a vibrant musical universe of his own design. It was selected by The Guardian music critic John Fordham as Album of the Month and #3 Best Jazz Album of the Year.
“Blake brings his boundary-breaking approach to new heights on 2023’s Dance of the Mystic Bliss. A harmonically shimmering and textural production that showcases his bold arranging and virtuosic improvisation skills. These are deeply interwoven productions, encompassing the listener in a kind of topographical map of sound." —- Matt Collar, All Music
